Since 1980 Steffen Brothers has invested thousands of hours in testing materials and zeroing in on the mathematical tapers, spigoted ferrules, and other signature features that drive performance. We build each rod by hand in the U.S. with American-made fiberglass, graphite, and components.

Shane Gray

A true Michigan man, Shane is a full time rod builder, and fly fishing innovator. When he is not chasing the "perfect" build, or, the next greatest rod tech innovation, he chases trout, bass, steelhead and salmon.

Shane loves to talk with people about fly rods, and really enjoy the calls and emails from clients all over the world that enjoy fishing and catching fish with the rods he builds.

Andy Stiebler

Andy is a life-long angler, who has forged a profession in branding and eCommerce. Andy will be leading the efforts to grow the Steffen Brothers brand and invite folks into unique opportunities that will go beyond the fly rods.

In a full circle moment, Andy was introduced to Shane Gray by Mark Steffen, when he was trying to purchase his first fiberglass rod! Ever since, he has collaborated with Shane on custom builds for anglers all over the USA.

Andy Stiebler

Obsession

An Idea is sparked

1977. From experimental graphite tennis racquets to fly rods! Mark Steffen began designing graphite rod layups. Testing his ideas across the mountain west, and eventually measuring up his prototypes in the final frontier... Alaska.

Origin

A new beginning

1980. The official launch of Steffen Brothers fly rods. Mark and Tim Steffen began taking custom orders and continued to evolve there taper designs. There unique build style and hand rolled blanks enabled them to customize for length and WT quickly for there growing following.

Cult Originals

Glass is not dead

1992. After experimenting with high modulus graphite and various e-glasses. Mark Steffen uncovered unique military grade uni-s glass. This was the beginning of the cult chestnut colored glass blanks!

A New Chapter

2020. Mark & Tim retire, and Shane Gray carries the torch forward! The Steffen Brothers brand means many things to many anglers. We will continue to produce amazing fishing gear that is earnest, noteworthy, and fun! From the very first launch day in 1980, to now, Shane and Andy, are dedicated to keep a pioneering spirit of this American-made brand alive.
